A collection of volumes on sports and pastimes, from the sporting and publishing project conceived by Longmans Green & Co. and edited by Henry Somerset, 8th Duke of Beaufort. Between 1885 and 1902 it developed into a series of sporting books which aimed to cover comprehensively all major sports and pastimes. This set contains: Fishing, 1886. Third edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece and numerous in-text images. Written by Henry Cholmondeley-Pennell, a British writer on angling, poet, and Inspector of Sea Fisheries. Shooting: Moor & Marsh, 1887. Second edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece, seven plates, and numerous in-text images. Collated complete. Written by Thomas de Grey, Lord Walsingham, an English politician and amateur entomologist, and Sir Ralph William Frankland Payne-Gallwey, an English engineer, historian, ballistics expert, and artist. Shooting: Field & Covert, 1887. Second edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece, ten plates, and numerous in-text images. Collated complete. Written by Thomas de Grey, Lord Walsingham and Sir Ralph William Frankland Payne-Gallwey. Boating, 1889. Second edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece, nine plates, numerous in-text images, and four maps. Collated complete. Written by Walter Bradford Woodgate, a British barrister and oarsman who won the Wingfield Sculls and various events at Henley Royal Regatta including the Silver Goblets and the Diamond Challenge Sculls. Tennis and Lawn Tennis, 1890. First edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece, eleven plates, and numerous in-text images. Written by Charles Gilbert Heathcote, an English barrister and tennis player who was one of the founders of the All England Club, and played in the first Wimbledon Championships in 1877.
Condition
In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spines with the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark. Light age toning to the endpapers. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of Tennis.
