Work on this book's production was done in turn by three different publishers, of which the second, George Routledge and Sons, was the first to issue it. This stands as Henty's only novel published by them.

Henty, who is best known for a prolific output of historical and adventure novels which earned him his reputation as the most popular Boy's author of his day, inspiring other other writers to attempt writing juvenile adventure stories in his style, including Herbert Strang, Percy F. Westerman and Henry Everett McNeil.
