A wonderful collection of prose from respected literary figures of the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, from Sir Thomas Malory to Thomas Babington. Contents include 'The End of Empires and of Life' by Sir Walter Raleigh, 'Dreams and Apparitions' from Thomas Hobbes, and 'Public Schools' by John Locke. Selected and annotated with an introductory essay by George Saintsbury, an English critic and literary historian who was one of the most influential critics of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as well as being a knowledgeable wine connoisseur. Bound in full-vellum by Burn & Co.

In the original full vellum binding. Externally, smart with minor wear and light fading to the extremities, as is typical with ageing. Boards cocked slightly. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot and minor age toning to the extremities. Bookseller's label to the front pastedown. Bound by Burn & Co.
