A very scarce first edition.
Illustrated with a frontispiece, large folding colour map, and eighteen plates, with further vignettes. Collated, complete.
Frank Hatton was an English geologist and explorer, who died young from an accidental shooting in the Bornean jungle. His father, Joseph Hatton, edited this work from his son's journals, providing an account of his sons 'Explorations and Adventures on the Equator'.
With a preface from Sir Walter Medhurst.
With a publisher's catalogue to the rear, dated October, 1885.
Hatton was killed when his Winchester rifle, entangled in the forest vegetation, went off while he was pursuing an elephant.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Boards bright. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with light fraying in these regions. Head and tail of rear joint starting, with board firmly held. Inscription to a front blank. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Large tear to folding map.
