What Our Customers Say...

Description

Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding

Twelfth edition. With a portrait frontispiece. A work of speculative natural history and philosophy originally published anonymously. It brought together various ideas of stellar evolution with the progressive transmutation of species in an accessible narrative which tied together numerous scientific theories of the age. The work was well received by Victorian society and became an international bestseller. However, its unorthodox themes contradicted the natural theological theories of the time and were reviled by clergymen and by scientists. Written by Robert Chambers, a Scottish publisher, geologist, evolutionary thinker, author and journal editor who was highly influential in mid-nineteenth-century scientific and political circles. With an introduction by Anthony Ireland.
