Originally rejected by Routledge publishing house, Self-Help was published by John Murray selling 20,000 copies in its first year. This title lead Smiles to celebrity status and a much consulted guru.
Condition
In a calf prize binding. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing to spine and extremities. Slight loss to head of spine. Front hinge slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Prize ink inscription dated 1885 from City of London School to recto of first blank.
