Illustrated, Leather Binding, Very Scarce

A vanishingly scarce work.

Presentation leaf to the front, reading 'Presented to Mr and Mrs William Wadey, in memory of my dear parents, William Egerton & Louisa Ellen Hubbard. Leonardslee, 1853-83, May 1884, Louisa M. Hubbard'.

Albumen portrait photographs of William Egerton and Louisa Ellen Hubbard are mounted to the front paste down. 

Four pages to the front contain the Wadey's hand-written family register, listing the births, marriages, and deaths, of the parents William and Mary Wadey, and their eleven children, who were born from the 27th July 1841 to the 25th February 1869. The children include Mary Ann, Caroline, Sarah, William, Ellen, Ann, Harriot, Margaret, James, Harry, and Jessie. All of the siblings, except for Caroline, married. William died in 1889, Mary in 1891, and the children ranging from 1864 to 1953. 

Louisa Maria Hubbard was a feminist social reformer, knowing for her activism to increase the opportunities for women's education and employment. She is best known for her publication 'A Handbook for Women's Work', which was later named as 'The Englishwoman's Yearbook'.

An interesting religious text by the Anglican bishop William Walsham How, containing the gospels from Saint Matthew to Romans, with an extensive and insightful commentary by How.

Illustrated with in-text engravings.

Condition

In a full decorative calf binding with straight grain morocco panels to the boards. Externally, smart. Very light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Spine is a little faded. Only a few minor marks to the boards and spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with only a couple of scattered spots. Presentation leaf is age-toned.
