The very scarce first UK edition of this work, translated from the original German of an unnamed earlier volume by Gilbert Richard Redgrave, and edited by the same.
Redgrave was an English architectural draughtsman, bibliographer and art historian. He was president of the Bibliographical Society of London in 1908, and with Alfred W. Pollard edited the STC, or Short-Title Catalogue.
Beautifully illustrated throughout with charming vignettes.
Arranges in VI sections, this work discusses elementary ornament, pre-Christian ornament, early Christian ornament, Mohammedan ornament, mediaeval ornament, and modern ornament.
Condition
In a half calf binding, with cloth covered boards. Externally, smart. Discolouration to head of front board. Light rubbing to joints. Front hinge strained, but firmly held. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright.
