'La Joie de Vivre' is the twelfth novel in Emile Zola's Rougon-Macquart series. The twenty-volume series (Natural and social history of a family under the Second Empire) follows the family members of two titular branches of a fictional family living during the Second French Empire.
Zola was a twice Nobel Prize nominated French novelist, and an important contributor to the development of theatrical naturalism. He was a major figure in the political liberalisation of France and in the exoneration of Alfred Dreyfus, which is encapsulated in his renowned newspaper opinion headlined J'Accuse...!
