This is a fascinating example of one of the handbooks produced for the 1884 International Health Exhibition, one of a series of international exhibitions held in London during the 1880s. The event celebrated the significant advancements made by the Victorians in improving disease control and the health of the nation. It also platformed practical and inexpensive ideas which could be adopted by the public to better their living conditions. The 1884 exhibition was attended by no less than 4 million people, and thus constitutes a landmark event in the history of public health. In this tract, J. J. Manley offers a thorough examination of the history of salt, its production and manufacture in Great Britain replete with several data tables to supplement his claims.
