The first edition of the work in book form. First published in 'The Gardener's Chronicle'.In the publisher's original full vellum. Illustrated with headpieces and tailpieces by E.V.B. This work on gardening is a reflective account of a year spent in a garden. Offering a detailed, almost meditative exploration of the daily rhythms and observations of garden life. Written and illustrated by Eleanor Vere Boyle, a Scottish artist of the Victorian era. Boyle was one the most important female illustrators of the 1860's and was known for her watercolour children's book illustrations. She always signed her works, including her literary works, with E.V.B. to obscure her identity.
Condition
In the original full vellum binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Light discolouration to the spine and board edges, as is typical with ageing, with small spots to the boards. The odd small mark. Front hinge starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Age toning to the extremities with the previous owner's bookplate to the front endpaper and a contemporary ink inscription to the rear endpaper.
