First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

The first edition of this work in book form. The text of this essay first appeared in the Westminster Review in 1840.

Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece of Cruikshank by F.W. Pailthorpe, three further plates, and over forty vignette illustrations. Collated, complete.

With three pages of advertisements to the rear.

With a preface discussing Thackeray as 'an artist and an art-critic' from W. E. Church.

Condition

In the publisher's original paper wraps. Small closed tears to fore edge of wraps. Wraps lightly age toned, with light rubbing to joints and back strip head and tail. Head of front joint starting, with board firmly held. Hinges strained, but firmly held. First gathering working loose, with two plates detached and loosely inserted. Otherwise, binding tender due to gutta percha. This work usually found rebound for this reason. Pages exceptionally clean and bright.
