This work is commonly praised as being the best and most complete work on gardening and garden plants published in the nineteenth century, remaining a standard work on the subject even to this day. The Royal Horticultural Society's current 'Dictionary of Gardening' has Nicholson's 'Illustrated Dictionary' as its basis, even retaining its predecessor's layout. Edited by George Nicholson, an English botanist and horticulturist, awarded the Victoria Medal of Honour by the Royal Horticultural Society for his contributions to horticulture. Assisted by Professor James William Helenus Trail, a British botanist who served as Professor of Botany at Aberdeen University, and John Garrett, a British botanist.

Condition

In the original green cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. The odd small mark to the boards. Hinges starting but firm to volumes I to IV. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting and minor age toning to the extremities.
