    A very scarce work.

    An important study on "the use of intoxicants and narcotics in relation to intellectual life", exploring what the real influence of stimulants and narcotics are on the brain. The author questions "do they give increases strength, greater lucidity of mind and more continuous power?", or "do they weaken and cloud the intellect?".

    Including letters and testimonies from Charles Darwin, Mark Twain, Wilkie Collins, Thomas Hardy, John Ruskin, Charles Kingsley, and more. Some appearing for the first time in book form.

    Condition

    In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with light marks and rubbing to the cloth. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. A couple of small tears to the joins. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with a few scattered spots.
