An impressive retrospective of Japanese art, including a brief history of the country. This work was one of the key pieces which helped to popularise Japan in the West, and the Japonisme style which ended up in the creation of Art Nouveau.
Volume I is illustrated with seventeen chromolithographs, fourteen monochrome plates, and in-text engravings throughout.
Volume II is illustrated with fourteen chromolithographs, seventeen monochrome plates, and in-text engravings throughout.
Collated, Volume I lacking the index, being pages 305 to 310, and each volume is bound without one plate.

Condition
In the original publisher's silk boards. Externally, worn. Front board of Volume I is held by cords only, rear board is detached but present, both boards detached but present to Volume II. Silk is discoloured and with handling marks. Rubbing to the extremities. Fading, loss, and lifting to the spines, heavier to Volume II. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some scattered spots.
