This essay was written by Mathew Arnold, the English poet and critic, and discusses the Old Testament, in particular the book of Isaiah. In this volume Arnold uses his knowledge of Hebrew to analyse the biblical passages, providing translations and his own interpretations on the words, believing that a 'critic' is needed accurately analyse them. 

Arnold was known for his controversial religious opinions, critiquing the bible and religion, which was rare for the time.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth. Externally very smart with fading to the spine, rubbing and bumping to the extremities and the odd minor mark to the boards. Internally generally firmly bound with only the odd page starting. Pages lightly age toned and generally clean with only the odd spot.
