An impressive set of thirty volumes from David Douglas' "American Authors" series, uniformly bound in eighteen volumes.

Each volume is bound with their original pictorial front wraps preserved. 

Douglas was noted for publishing lesser known American works in a cheat format for British readers. They were produced in a pocket-sized format, and sold for a shilling apiece. 

The authors featured in this set are James Lane Allen, John Burroughs, George W. Cable, Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, William D. Howells, Frank R. Stockton, and William Winter. 

‘Venetian Life’, by William D. Howells, complete as two volumes bound in one. Published in 1883.

‘Locusts and Wild Honey’ bound with ‘Wake-Robin’, by John Burroughs. Both titles were published in 1884.

‘A Fearful Responsibility’ bound with ‘An Imperative Duty’, by William D. Howells. Published in 1886 and 1891 respectively.

‘Indian Summer’, by William D. Howells, complete as two volumes bound in one. Published in 1887.

‘Italian Journeys’, by William D. Howells, complete as two volumes in one. Published in 1887.

‘Birds and Poets’ bound with ‘Fresh Fields’, by John Burroughs. Published in 1887 and 1885 respectively.

Condition

In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. Very light rubbing to the raised bands. Spines are a little faded. A few very light marks to the boards. Bookplate to the front paste downs. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
