An important collection of 34 essays and short stories written by the American author Washington Irving, first published serially from 1819 to 1820, establishing for Irving the pseudonym of Geoffrey Crayon, which he used throughout his career.
Illustrated with a frontispiece and twenty four plates, with numerous further vignette illustrations. Collated, complete.
This was among the first widely read works of American literature in Britain and Europe.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, back strip and boards age toned. Significant losses to paper spine label. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Front hinge strained, with board a touch tender to head. Frontispiece detached and loosely inserted. Internally, binding generally firmly held. Pages bright and generally clean, with only the odd handling mark or spot.
