Description

First Edition, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding

The first edition.

In the publisher's original cloth binding.

Comprising three essays on Ireland, reflecting the views of English poet and cultural critic Matthew Arnold. With radical discussions of the social and political issues of the time, including the complexities of Irish affairs and of the future of liberalism.

He prefaces the work with the expectation that they will not be received in great favour due to his profession as a man of letters rather than a politician.

Condition

In the original cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. A few small marks to the boards. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with light spotting to the endpapers.
