First edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece and ten plates. Collated complete. A detailed study on the origins and music of the violin, with chapters on the viol Gothic, the music of the viol in the Netherlands, France, England, and Italy, the music of the violin in France, England, Italy, and Germany, as well as the development of the sound. Includes references to masters of the instrument as well as important composers. Written by George Hart, an English violin maker and dealer of London who authored two works on the violin including 'The Violin: Its Makers and its Imitators' and 'The Violin and Its Music'.
Condition
In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities. Fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Hinges starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light spotting to the first and last few pages with age toning to the extremities. A contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper. Bound by Smith & Bros.
