J. F. Layson offers a biography of George Stephenson, renowned as the "Father of Railways". Built by George and his son's company Robert Stephenson and Company, the Locomotion No. 1 was the first steam locomotive to carry passengers on a public rail line, in 1825.

George also built the first public inter-city railway line in the world to use locomotives, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, which opened in 1830.

Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece and one further plate. Collated, complete.

Condition

In a full calf prize binding, with extensive gilt detailing. Externally, excellent. Bookplate to front pastedown, concealing closed tear to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
