'The Prince and the Pauper' serves as Mark Twain's first attempt at historical fiction, following the accession of nine-year-old Edward VI in 1547 and his interactions with lookalike Tom Canty, a London pauper.
The story has been widely adapted over the years to stage, film and television.
Illustrated with a frontispiece and many vignettes.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine and a few marks and damp spots to the boards. Spine is cocked. Internally, pages 97-112; 119-122; 151-154; 161-176; 241-256, and 353-368 are detached, but present, with other leaves susceptible to binding failing. This is largely due to the quality of binding used. Pages are generally bright and clean, with occasional spots. Contemporary ink inscription to the 'Works by Mark Twain' page.
