Illustrated by R. Westall with 12 monochrome plates, including a frontispiece portrait of John Milton. Collated, complete.
This 1881 edition collects Milton’s major poems: "Paradise Lost," "Paradise Regained," "Lycidas," and "Comus," among others, drawn “from the original editions,” and includes a prefatory “Life of the Author” by Alexander Chalmers.
Alexander Chalmers (1759–1834) was a prolific Scottish editor, biographer and compiler, notably of The General Biographical Dictionary.
Condition
Bound in a full red calf binding, rebacked with original spine laid down. Externally, generally smart. The odd handling mark and spot to boards with slight soiling. Slight creasing to calf of boards towards joints. Rubbing and the odd scratch to boards, with slight loss to calf. Slight rubbing and creasing to spine. Hinges reinforced. Previous owner's contemporary ink inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the odd spot, heavier to first and last few leaves.
