A detailed ornithological dictionary of British birds. This work includes the Ornithological Dictionary of George Montagu, an English army officer and naturalist. This work was one of the main texts that made ornithology popular in Britain and helped to make it the subject of serious study. With additional details described by John Selby and William Yarrell, English naturalists and ornithologists, as well as commentary from natural history journals. Compiled and edited by Edward Newman, an English entomologist, botanist and writer.
Condition
In the original blue cloth binding with gilt. Externally, sound with rubbing to the extremities and light bumping. Minor loss to the cloth at the board tips and tail of the spine with light loss to the head of the spine. Light fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Front hinge starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot and light age toning to the endpapers. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper. Ink stamp to the front pastedown.
