Complete in two volumes. First trade edition, preceded by a small private print from Birmingham. A celebrated historical novel, set mainly in the middle years of the seventeenth century. The story follows the Anglican protagonist who is fighting against the temptation to convert to Roman Catholicism. He becomes a courier to Charles I and is involved in the intrigues between the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England. Written by Joseph Henry Shorthouse, an English novelist. Bound by Mudie.
Condition
Bound in full straight grained morocco. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and minor fading to the spine. The odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting and minor age toning to the extremities. With a contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper.
