This novel follows the adventures of two young brothers, Tom and Peter Scudamore, as they run away from home after the death of their father and join the British army in Portugal, serving with distinction during the hard-fought battles of the Peninsula War.
Written by G. A. Henty, who is best known for a prolific output of historical and adventure novels which earned him his reputation as the most popular Boy's author of his day, inspiring other other writers to attempt writing juvenile adventure stories in his style, including Herbert Strang, Percy F. Westerman and Henry Everett McNeil.
Condition
In the publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart, with minor rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Minor damp stains and a couple marks to the boards. Internally, binding is strained and failing in places due to gutta percha. Preface-p.vi are detached but present. Pages 113-128 are at risk of detaching with further handling; pages 81-96 have neatly detached and are present. Pages are generally bright and clean, with offsetting to the endpapers. Contemporary ink inscription to the verso of the front free endpaper. With scattered spots throughout.
