What Our Customers Say...

Description

Decorative Binding, Illustrated, Leather Binding

A 'new edition' of Ruskin's seminal work, an edition identified by Ruskin as much more "admirable" than his own 1849 edition.

Beautifully bound in full vellum.

Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, and a further thirteen plates by Ruskin. Collated, complete.

Printed on hand-made paper by the Chiswick press.

The 'lamps' of the title refer to Ruskin's seven principles of architecture, of which he writes about in this extended essay and went on to enlarge in his three-volume 'The Stones of Venice'. The book helps to capture and summarise thoughts of the Gothic Revival, which was well under way at the time its publication.

Condition

In a full vellum binding, with gilt detailing to back strip and board perimeters. Externally, excellent, with instances of minor rubbing to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally bright, though a touch age toned to perimeters.
