Illustrated by John Leech and H. K. Brown (Phiz) with monochrome vignettes, monochrome wood engraved plates, a hand coloured vignette to the title page, and twenty-three hand coloured engravings on steel to 'Mr Romford's Hounds, twelve to 'Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour', eleven to 'Plain or Ringlets', sixteen to 'Handley Cross', twelve to 'Ask Mamma', and seven to 'Hawbuck Grange'. Collated, complete. 

In a beautiful uniform decorative cloth binding, with gilt illustrations and details to the spine and boards. 

A collection of sporting novels by Robert Smith Surtees. Surtees was a popular sporting writer, beginning his writing live by contributing to the "Sporting Magazine". His best novel is often considered to be "Mr Sponge"s Sporting Tour". His comical novels are engaging and witty, with his writing style and character sometimes being compared to Charles Dickens. 

This set includes: ‘Hawbuck Grange’, ‘Ask Mamma’, ‘Handley Cross; or, Mr. Jorrock’s Hunt’, ‘Mr Romford’s Hounds’, ‘Plain or Ringlets’, ‘Mr Sponge’s Sporting Tour’. 

A complete seven volume set.

Condition

In the publisher's original decorative cloth. Externally excellent with only minor bumping and slight fading to the spines. Minimal offsetting to the endpapers. Internally firmly bound to all but 'Handley Cross' which is tender to the title page and contents, with clean and generally bright pages to all with only minimal age toning to the odd plate.
