This dictionary, often referred to simply as 'Brewer's', offers definitions and descriptions of many well-known phrases, allusions and figures, both historical and mythical.
Written by British lexicographer Ebenezer Cobham Brewer, who aimed to appeal to people who wished to understand these origins, but did not have a university education.
With three pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear.
Condition
In a half calf binding, with cloth boards and renewed endpapers. Externally, very smart, with minor shelf wear and a couple water spots to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned, but generally clean, with scattered spotting to the first and last few leaves.
