Illustrated, Leather Binding

Sixteen volumes, being Volumes I to VI of the 1880 to 1882 'New Series', and Volumes I to VIII of the 1883 to 1886 'New Series'.

'The Theatre' monthly review of drama, music and the fine arts of the 19th century.

The magazine was originally published in 1877 and 1897, and was edited by Clement Scott from 1880 to 1889. The articles in the magazine included reviews of theatre productions from around the world, theatrical news, short stories, poetry, and biographical sketches of important theatrical and artistic figures of the day.

Many of the plates are Woodburytype photographs of eminent actors and actresses of the day, including Ellen Terry, Henry Irving, Marion Hood, Helen Maud Holt, George Grossmith, Ada Cavendish, Maurice Barrymore, and more.

Condition

In a half morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, a little rubbed, heavier to the volumes for 1880 to 1882. Rubbing has resulted in marginal loss of leather, and a little loss of paper. Light bumping to the extremities. Spines are a little faded, more so to the volumes for 1880 to 1883. Front board of the volume for July to December 1886 is faded. Bookplate to the front paste downs, blind stamp to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with the occasional spot to the plates.
