First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce

The first edition of this very scarce work with monochrome frontispiece and illustrations throughout. 

Contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper, dated 1881.

In the publisher's original cloth binding with gilt illustration to the board. 

Leaves of publisher's advertisements to the rear. 

This illustrated novel is divided into eight stories set in the land of Thule, a faraway island to the North originating from Greek explorer, Pytheas.

Moyr Smith has a reputable background in architecture, art and design, most famed for his work on ceramic tiles.

Condition

In the original cloth binding. Externally, smart with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Light scattered markings to the boards. Internally, title and frontispiece pages disbound, but otherwise firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the odd spot.
