The first edition, with the 'A.B' catalogue dated 1879-1880 to the rear as called for. 

In the publisher's original second variant binding with the gilt details to the boards, including the initials of the author. 

Illustrated with a monochrome engraved frontispiece, and monochrome engraved vignettes by Leon Benett.

A popular novel from Jules Verne's important 'Voyages Extraordinaires' series, which included fifty-four novels about epic journeys and exciting adventures. The series included some of the most important novels in adventure literature, such as 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' and 'Around the World in Eighty Days'. 

This instalment of the series tells the story of a Chinese business man who, believing his main investment to have gone bankrupt, decides that he wants to die and hires his friend to kill him, leading to an adventure full of travel, a hijacked ship and a kidnapping.

Condition

In the publisher's original binding. Externally, damp staining to the boards, with minimal edge wear. Past owner's signature to the front free endpaper, with bookplate remnants to the pastedown. Internally firmly bound with lightly age toned pages and the odd spot, heavier to the front and rear.
