What Our Customers Say...
Description
Original Binding, Very Scarce
A very scarce handwritten report on the Severn Tunnel by the engineer of the tunnel, John Hawkshaw. A unique and really quite special original source on the Great Western Railway and the tunnel.
In this letter, Hawkshaw discusses the current development of the tunnel, which was being built when he wrote this letter in 1879, and the difficulties that they were facing in the construction.
The letter is addressed to Frederick George Saunders, who was the chairman of GWR.
The Severn Tunnel was opened by Great Western Railway in 1886. They begun work on the tunnel, which measures at 7,008 metres long, in 1873, to link South Gloucestershire to Monmouthshire, and remained the longest underwater tunnel in the world for a century
