What Our Customers Say...

Description

Illustrated, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce

In the publisher's original red cloth binding.

This volume presents the holdings of the National Gallery as they stood in the late 19th century, when the Trafalgar Square institution was still comparatively small but already world-renowned.

The catalogue combines concise descriptions of each painting with 242 illustrations throughout, intended to give readers both a reference and a souvenir. Works are arranged by school and artist: Italian masters, Dutch and Flemish painters, the Spanish school, and the growing British collection.

Henry Blackburn (1830–1897) was a Victorian British art critic, editor, and writer best known for his illustrated travel books and exhibition catalogues.
