William Makepeace Thackeray is best known for his satirical works regarding English society, particularly for 'Vanity Fair'. He often published under various pseudonyms in his youth to avoid personal criticism. He took up journalism, something he had dabbled with in the past, and wrote art critiques, short sketches, and reviewed books. He started writing longer works of fiction, whilst also contributing to popular magazines such as Punch. In the latter part of his life he achieved greater acclaim for his work and was considered the equal of Charles Dickens.
