Frederick Burnaby, a popular and adventurous British Army intelligence officer, recounts his daring journey to Khanate of Khiva through Russian Asia, which had just been closed to travellers. War had broken out between the Russian army and the Turcoman tribesmen of the desert and, whilst the Russians announced they would protect Burnaby along the route, this proved impossible. The accomplishment of this task in the winter of 1875–1876 brought him immediate fame.

Condition

In the publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart, with rubbing and slight bumping to the extremities. Minor marks to the boards. Residue from bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. With scattered spotting throughout. Toning and spotting to the folding maps.
