A very scarce work.
Five volumes, being Volumes VII, VIII, IX, X, and XI, of a total of XXIII volumes.
These five volumes explore different regions of India, offering a history, alongside a topographical and geographical survey of the year.
By Alexander Cunningham, a British Army engineer, who founded the Archaeological Survey of India. For this work, Cunningham carried out excavations across India, over 725 sites. For this reason, he is regarded as the founder of archaeology in India. Cunningham wrote each volume in this set, besides Volume VII and VIII, which were compiled by J. D. Beglar under Cuningham's superintendence.
This set contains:
Volume VII, 'Report of a Tour in Bundelkhand and Malwa, 1871-72; and in the Central Provinces, 1873-74'. Illustrated with twenty-two plates and maps, five of which are folding. Collated, complete.
Volume VIII, 'Report of a Tour Through the Bengal Provinces of Patna, Gaya, Mongir, and Bhagalpur; the Santal Parganas, Manbhum, Singhbhum, and Birbhum; Bankura, Raniganj, Bardwan, and Hughli, in 1872-73'. Illustrated with twenty-two plates and maps, three of which are folding. Collated, complete.
Volume IX, 'Report of a Tour in the Central Provinces in 1873-74 and 1874-75'. Illustrated with thirty plates. Collated, complete.
Volume X, 'Report of Tours in Bundelkhand and Malwa in 1874-75 and 1876-77'. Illustrated with thirty-six plates. Collated, complete.
Volume XI, 'Report of Tours in the Gangetic Provinces From Badaon to Bihar, in 1875-76 and 1877-78'. Illustrated with forty-four plates, three of which are folding. Collated, complete.

Condition
In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Volume VII is worn, with loss and lifting to the backstrip, a smaller amount of loss to the spines of the other volumes. Minor bumping to the extremities. Library label to the tail of the spines. Spines are faded. Light marks and rubbing to the cloth. Spots to the spines Volumes VII and VIII. Small patch of cockling to the front board of Volume VII. Front hinge of Volume VII has failed. Front hinge of Volume IX is starting but firm. Hinges of Volume X are starting but firm. Rear hinge of Volume XI has failed, front hinge is starting. Handling marks to the endpapers, heavier marks to the front endpaper of Volume XI. Institutional label to the front paste downs. Internally, generally firmly bound, a little strained in places. Pages are bright and clean. Institutional blind stamp to the textblocks and to the plates.
