Novel by Thomas Hardy, a comedy concerning Ethelberta's career as a famous poet and story-teller, struggling to support her family and keep her father's secret. Originally serialised for The Cornhill Magazine and published in book-form in 1876 in two volumes, the present copy is a new edition of 1877, first thus in one volume.
Illustrated with a frontispiece and two further plates by George du Maurier, cartoonist known for his work in Punch and Gothic novel Trilby.
Collated, lacking three plates. Collated, bound without 'The Hartfield Estate,' 'All Before Them was a Sheet of Whiteness,' and 'She Lessened His Gaze, and was soon Out of Sight.'
Condition
In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with some shelf wear, spine and boards bumped to extremities, minor chipping and loss to upper right corner of front board, few minor damp marks to rear board, spine lightly cocked forward. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting scattered to the leaves throughout. Illustrated with a frontispiece and two further plates. Collated, lacking three plates.
