Illustrated with a frontispiece to Volume I. Collated, complete.

Lamb was an essayist, poet, and antiquarian, known for his collaboration with his sister 'Tales from Shakespeare', as well as his 'Essays of Elia'.

Throughout his life Lamb was the center of English literary circles, being friends with Coleridge, Southey, and Wordsworth. He has been described as "the most lovable figure in English literature".

This set includes Lamb's correspondence with these eminent literary figures of his day, as well as his 'Essays of Elia', 'Tales From Shakespeare', and stories contributed to 'Mrs Leicester's School', and more.

Edited by Percy Fitzgerald, a noted biographer who also published volumes on Laurence Sterne, William IV, George IV, and David Garrick. 

Prize inscription to the verso of the front endpaper of Volume I.

Condition

In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Light rubbing and marks to the boards and spine. Light bumping to the extremities. Small amount of wear to the head of the spine of Volume I. Loss to the head of the rear joint of Volume I. Rubbing has resulted in a little loss of leather to the rear board of Volume I, and to the front board of Volume III. Small tear to the head of the front joint of Volume VI, and to the joints of Volume II. Front hinge of Volume I is starting but firm, as is the front hinge of Volume VI. Prize inscription to the verso of the front endpaper of Volume I. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with scattered spots.
