Frederick Burnaby, a popular and adventurous British Army intelligence officer, recounts his daring journey to Khanate of Khiva through Russian Asia, which had just been closed to travellers. War had broken out between the Russian army and the Turcoman tribesmen of the desert and, whilst the Russians announced they would protect Burnaby along the route, this proved impossible. He caught frostbite during the extreme winter blizzards, and he took three weeks to recover, being close to death. He evaded the Russian army, and was met by the Khan of Kokan's noblemen.
The accomplishment of this task in the winter of 1875–1876 brought Burnaby immediate fame.
