Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright and poet Oliver Goldsmith's work of natural history was first published in 1774.
A beautifully illustrated treatise on the animal kingdom, looking at birds, fish, insects and many more aspects of the natural world. The work sought to draw together all that was known about the planet and its plants and animals in the late eighteenth century.
Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece and engraved title page to each volume, fourteen plates to volume I, and twenty-one to volume II.
Collated, complete.
Inscription to front free endpaper of volume I.
Condition
In half calf bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Back strip a touch age toned, with rubbing to joints and centre of boards. Inscription to volume I front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Frontispiece of volume I tenderly held. Significant handling marks and spotting throughout both volumes, with significant closed tears and losses of perimeters to four plates of volume I.
