A Mudie bound 1875 copy of Thomas Hughes's popular children's fiction book Tom Brown's School Days. This edition is published as 'By an Old Boy'.
Tom Brown's School Days is a classic coming-of-age children's book which influenced the genre of British school novels. The story follows Tom Brown as he navigates bullies, friends and teenage rebellion after being transferred to Rugby School.
Hughes loosely based the story on his time at Rugby School, even fictionalising his real Head Master, Dr Thomas Arnold.
Includes an prize inscription from teacher to a student in 1876 as a 'prize for good conduct'.
Condition
Half morocco binding and marbled paper boards by Mudie. Externally smart. Light bumping on head and tail of the spine and extremities, resulting in some loss to the edges to the boards. Some minor rubbing to the leather. Front hinge is starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscriptions to the verso of the front endpaper, and to the recto of the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the odd spot.
