The first edition of this very scarce work.
A pamphlet discussing the life and work of Timothy Hackworth. This was issued the celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the world's first public railway to use steam locomotives.
Hackworth was a steam locomotive engineer, who invented pioneering improvements on locomotives which were used right up until the last days of steam locomotives. In particular, who designed the 'Royal George', which was the most powerful locomotive of its day. He was additionally the locomotive superintendent of the S&DR.
Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, and one plate.
Condition
In the original publisher's paper wraps. Externally, generally smart. Wraps are a little age-toned and spotted. A small amount of wear and loss to the backstrip. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with scattered spots.
