Illustrated with a photographic frontispiece and five photographic plates. Collated complete. Set in the Scottish Borders in the mid-16th century, this narrative poem is written in six cantos as if being sung by a minstrel late in the 1600s with antiquarian notes. The poem follows an aging minstrel who seeks hospitality at Newark Castle and in recompense tells his hostess and her ladies a tale of a sixteenth-century Border feud. Written by Sir Walter Scott, a Scottish novelist, poet and historian. Illustrated by William Russell Sedgefield, a British photographer. Publisher's advertisements to the rear.
Condition
In the original full cloth binding with gilt. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and fading to the spine. Light loss to the head and tail of the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Light spotting and age toning to the endpapers. Light loss to the tissue guards. Contemporary ink inscriptions to the front endpapers.
