The first edition, with the chapter on the author's opinion of missionaries left without the omissions found in the later editions, which were omitted die to the controversial manner of his opinions. In this chapter, Kingsley expresses that missionaries are pointless, and questions whether it is right to believe that your religion is the one correct one, though he does credit some missionaries, praising the way they 'refrain from fanatical declamations against what to the natives is a natural mode of life'.
Bound in quarter morocco with cloth to the boards. Endpapers and blanks renewed, retaining original half title.
An account of a journey over the South Sea by the Earl of Pembroke, George Robert Charles, and George Henry Kingsley, a medical doctor and writer. The work recounts their travels, including their stops in Tahiti, Bora-Bora and Samoa. The work also describes their unfortunate shipwreck.
Condition
Bound in quarter morocco with cloth to the boards, rebacked. Endpapers and blanks renewed, retaining original half title. Externally smart with minor wear to the extremities and joints, and the odd slight mark to the boards. Front hinge cracked but firm. Light offsetting to the free endpapers. Internally firmly bound with minimal age toning and the odd spot, heavier to the front and rear.
