What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Very Scarce
First edition.
Vanishingly scarce work.
This contains Volume One, or the first and second reports from the Royal Commission on Scientific Instruction and the Advancement of Science.
This Royal Commission, also known as the Devonshire Report, sat from 1870 to 1875, with the aim to improve the teaching of science in schools. The measure was introduced following the 1861 and 1864 Newcastle and Clarendon Commissions, which brought to light significant failings within the UK's education system.
The Commission published its first report in 1871, a supplement and second report in 1872, and six subsequent reports, the final of which appeared in 1875. Unfortunately, despite this attention, the final report concluded that "still no adequate effort has been made to supply the deficiency of Scientific Instruction pointed out by the Commissioners in 1861 and 1864. We are compelled, therefore, to record our opinion that the Present State of Scientific Instruction in our schools is extremely unsatisfactory".
This particular report contains an outline of the commissions, the first report, a supplementary report, the second report, a list of witnesses, minutes of evidence, analysis of evidence, and an appendix.
