What Our Customers Say...

Description

A new edition.

Undated, dated from several institutional copies.

In the original decorative cloth binding.

This book, written by renowned English artist William Hogarth, chronicles a five-day journey that Hogarth and his friends took around the Isle of Sheppey, an island off the coast of Kent in southeast England. "The party consists of Hogarth, [James] Thornhill, [Samuel] Scott, [William] Tothall, and [Ebenezer] Forrest, and each of the five has his allotted department. Thornhill made the map, Hogarth and Scott furnished the sketches, Tothall faithfully discharged the joint offices of treasurer and caterer, and Forrest wrote the journal" [p. ii, iii].

The book is written in the form of a journal, with Hogarth recording their experiences and observations during the trip. It includes descriptions of the landscape, the people they met, and the places they visited, as well as sketches and drawings that Hogarth made along the way.

With sketches in sepia from the original drawings illustrating the tour by Hogarth and Scott. With a frontispiece, illustrated title page, thirteen plates (one folding) and numerous vignettes. Collated, complete.

With a sixteen-page catalogue of publisher's advertisements to the rear.
