In the publisher's original cloth binding. A scarce copy. First edition. Illustrated with numerous plates and engravings, with 21 plate on tinted paper including the fold-out frontispiece, with two fold-out plates and a fold-out colour map to the rear. Collated, complete. A contemporary, heavily illustrated account of the Paris Commune of 1871, documenting the seventy-three days of the Second Siege through eyewitness sketches, portraits taken from original photographs. John Leighton (1822–1912), also known under the pseudonym “Luke Limner,” was a British artist, illustrator, and designer noted for his graphic documentation of historical events. With four pages of advertisements to rear, uncut.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Fading to extremities and spine. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities, more so to spine, resulting in slight loss to cloth with one or two small closed tears. Previous bookseller's discreet blind stamp to front free endpaper. front hinge slightly cracked, with binding material slightly exposed, but holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. The odd spot to first and last few leaves and one or two spots to fore edge.
