This volume includes;
'The Adventures of Oliver Twist', illustrated with a vignette title and in-text illustrations by James Mahoney. Undated, dated 1871 from Jisc from a copy held at the British Library. Collated, bound without the frontispiece.
'Oliver Twist' is Dickens' best known novel, an exploration of child labour, domestic violence, and street children in Victorian England.
'Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit', illustrated with a vignette title and in-text illustrations by Frederick Barnard, erroneously listed to the title page as 'J. Barnard'. Undated, dated 1872 from Jisc from a copy held at the British Library. Collated, bound without the three plates.
‘Martin Chuzzlewit’ is about the eponymous Martin, who goes against his grandfather’s wishes and falls in love with an orphaned girl, intending to marry her. As a result, Martin is disinherited.
Condition
In a half morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, a little worn and rubbed. Light bumping to the extremities. Marks and discolouration to the boards. Cloth to the front joint is lifting. Hinges are starting but firm. Torn paper remnants to the paste downs. Lacking the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally with scattered spots. Bound without one plate to 'Oliver Twist' and three plates to 'Martin Chuzzlewit'.
