Illustrated with a frontispiece.

Adams presents a narrative of the author's mid-19th-century explorations in East Asia, combining travel impressions with scientific observation. Adams describes the landscapes, flora and fauna of Japan and Manchuria alongside accounts of ports, towns and rural life.

With sixteen pages of advertisements to the rear.

Arthur Adams was assistant surgeon on board HMS Samarang during the survey of the Malay Archipelago in 1843-1846.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bump to back strip head and tail, with light rubbing to joints. Light handling marks to boards. Hinges strained, and a touch tender. Internally, binding strained throughout. Pages lightly age toned, with the odd spot and light handling mark. Lacking tail of age toned tissue guard.
